F. SANDS BRUNNER : "Boyertown's Rockwell"
Frederick Sands Brunner was born in 1886 in Boyertown, PA. He had a love of painting at an early age. His father exhibited some of his paintings in his dry goods store. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art in Philadelphia, studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Daniel Garber, and
pursued a career in illustrative art with the Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia, PA. Brunner not only illustrated articles and stories within magazines, but also was awarded magazine cover art opportunities. His paintings appeared on the covers of The Saturday Evening Post, the Ladies Home Journal, This Week, and others. He also painted illustrations for advertisements for Coca Cola, Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Cliquot Beverage Company, and numerous other companies.
Brunner also supported the war effort with his artwork. He supplied the Red Cross with two posters and portrayed service men and women in his illustrations. His most famous portrait is that of his childhood friend, General Carl A. Spaatz.
F. Sands Brunner loved the outdoors. He loved hiking, camping, canoeing, mountain climbing, and fishing. He was an avid horseman, dog lover, and archer. He was a family man who enjoyed spending time with his wife and his two daughters and often included them as subjects within his Rockwell style paintings. He painted many landscapes of his outdoor adventures, including his camp grounds in the Adirondack Mountains of New York state.
Brunner died in Philadelphia in 1954.
This collection includes published illustrative works, portraits, landscapes, and vintage posters and calendar art.
It is a privilege to have the opportunity to represent this important collection. It is even more exciting to exhibit it in his hometown.
The show opens at Studio B, 39 East Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, PA on Friday evening, October 16th with a reception and continues through November 30th.
